On February 11, 1991, Troop 828 was established at St. Laurence Catholic Church with nine boys, five of whom earned Scouting's highest honor - Eagle rank. Since then, over 475 Scouts have joined the troop with 132 of those young men earning their Eagle. Without fail, we see many of our Scouts use their Scouting skills and leadership experiences as they grow in their educational pursuits, activities, and work, as well as provide exemplary service to their communities and country.
From 2012 to 2020, this boy-led troop has been recognized annually with Gold Level recognition in Scouting's Journey to Excellence program, which was accomplished through supportive parent involvement and by adhering to the aims of Scouting: character development, leadership development, citizenship training, and personal fitness. Our Scouts and adult leaders have attended advanced leadership training and applied those concepts to implement high quality, engaging program, year over year.
The troop maintains a strong Catholic identity offering the Catholic Religious Awards program, in which more than 80 Scouts have earned the Ad Altare Dei award. From 2011 to 2016, the troop was recognized by the Archdiocesan Catholic Committee on Scouting with the Pope Paul VI National Quality Unit Award and the National Catholic Unit Excellence Award from 2017 to 2020. Since its inception, the troop has provided approximately a thousand man-hours of service each year to St. Laurence Catholic Parish, Social Concerns Ministry, the Mamie George Community Center, and other organizations in support of events and Eagle Scout leadership projects. Most recently, very significant additional help was provided in Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.
Over the years, we have traveled near and far for monthly campouts, summer and winter camps, and high adventure camps making many memories along the way. Within the last few years, the troop’s activities have included canoeing down the San Marcos River and the Atchafalaya Basin Swamp, hiking the mountains around Camp Alexander in Colorado and Camp Daniel Boone in North Carolina, and biking the Mission Trail in San Antonio as well annual trips to one of the national BSA high adventure bases - Philmont, Sea Base, or Northern Tier.
