The Presider begins mass by saying “In the Name of the Father…” or other words. The Presider (or Deacon) leads the congregation in the penitential rite, followed by the Gloria. (During Advent and Lent, the Gloria is not sung. The Presider goes right to the Collect prayer.)
Cue #1: After the processional, the server who will be holding the Roman Missal reaches the pew.
Action: Immediately bring the Roman Missal and stand next to the Deacon’s Chair.
Whenever you cross in front of the tabernacle, you should always stop and reverence (bow from the waist) the tabernacle.
Mark #1: Front corner of the Deacon's Chair (see below)
Cue #2: Gloria ends
Action: Walk to the priest.
Mark #2:: In front of the priest holding the book.
Do not look over or down into the book. Look at the microphone on the priest's collar.
Stay still. Do not move.
Hold the book as below. Do not look down at the pages. Let the celebrant turn the pages. You are a living lectern. If you are shorter, you will need to hold the book up so the celebrant can see the words! Be careful where your fingers are - don't cover the words at the bottom of the page.
These books are expensive and sacred. Treat them with respect. Do not have dirty hands. Do not wrench the pages. Be gentle with them.
Cue #3: Presider finishes the Collect prayer
Action:
ONLY THE PRIEST or DEACON CLOSES THE BOOK.
Walk back around the Deacon's Chair
Reverence the tabernacle and return to the pew.
All are then seated for the Liturgy of the Word. Stand, sit, and sing with the congregation (Participate in the mass! You are helping to lead the mass, so be attentive and reverent.)
