History of Our School

THE HISTORY OF OUR SCHOOL

Founded in 1992, St. Laurence Catholic School (SLCS) opened with 210 students in preschool through fourth grades, and has grown to be the largest, coeducational grade school in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, enrolling more than 700 students in preschool through eighth grades. SLCS is located on a 5-acre campus, adjacent to St. Laurence Catholic Parish in Sugar Land, Texas.

SLCS was fully accredited in 1995 through the Texas Catholic Conference Department of Education (TCCED) under the guidance of the Texas Education Agency (TEA). In 1996, a competitive athletics program was unveiled as well as the completion of an educational facility, which featured classrooms, a gymnasium, a media center, art and music rooms, science labs and a chapel. In 2002, another wing was completed that provided additional middle school classrooms, another computer lab, an acoustical band room and a dining hall. During the 2005-2006 school year we were honored with the designation of Blue Ribbon School.

Our school and parish are named for St. Laurence the Martyr who was the first of seven deacons to serve the Church in the third century. When ordered to surrender the Church’s treasury to the Romans, St. Laurence instead distributed it among the poor whom he considered to be the “real treasures” of the Church because of their faith.
